Look at old WW2 movies - there were very young army colonels out there, which is the same rank as a Captain in the navy.

Not sure, there is that line dialogue about Tryla Scott in 'Conspiracy', as was mentioned earlier, but he may well have been the record holder at that point in time!

I guess all the follow up only underscores my confusion over some fans saying Kirk must be rising too fast in Abrams' film then -- since it seems to be a consensus that Kirk 'already' did just that, and now we'll be seeing how he did it. So much for cadet to captain too quickly, I guess?
