The funny thing is, given the past history of Kirk and crew....wouldn't somebody at Starfleet Command be saying, "Hey, you can't trust leaving the ship floating in dock with these guys, they will try to steal the bloody thing." Especially after Kirk and McCoy both express a burning desire to get back to Genesis.

Above all else they knew Kirk to be a loyal officer. They didn't realize just how much his friendship with Spock meant to him.

They should have figured that one out when he ignored orders to go to Altair to take Spock to Vulcan in "Amok Time".

Btw, have you ever wondered what the Admiral reading the mission reports coming out of the Enterprise must have thought...given some of the episodes...

Admiral Jelico read some of those reports in the New Frontier and said that Kirk was either delusional or a really bad writer.

Kirk would have beamed Jellico into the Brig... Any man who could handle Nogura... Jellico is a lightweight by comparison.
