What happened to seeing money for what it is: the public saying, "You did a good job. We believe you did a good enough job, in fact, that we'll pay you so you can do it again instead of flipping burgers."?

That's all the money is for. It isn't the end. It's the means. When you lose sight of that, you're a hack. Just a prostitute with a keyboard and a camera.

And for this complete you'll have to go back to the beginning Hollywood. Why should J. J. Abrams be expected to do things any differently than how things have been done since the words "Hollywood" first appeared on the side of that mountain?

Seriously. All the other directors I know of make movies for the love of the art form, not for money. Hitchcock, Scorsese, Jackson, Lee, none of them took a penny for their work! Bet you didn't know that.

Why can't that money-grubbing Abrams do exactly what a few people want him to do, and do it with the intent of not making money?

Cause you'll never see that in Hollywood now.

It's all about the money. They get paid millions to put out crap...and that's what they're gonna do until someone reforms the industry...or blows it up.

. . . And for a director, not making money on a film is burning bridges. Making money on a film makes you more marketable as a director and allows you to make more movies. Pretty simple concept, really, and I don't mean that to sound rude.

That's basic business. Typically, no one hires a failure on the hopes that his next project might be a success. There are exceptions, but that tends to be the rule.

It's a creative/financial balancing act. It's a standard way of working in Hollywood, especially for actors - you do the megabudget blockbuster to earn some points so you can go off and do the micro-budget projects you care more about.

Same can apply to directors, but even with financial success, it can still be a struggle to get money together for these low budget projects. People always want a return on their investment.

I was being sarcastic. Of course it's all about the money! If my company decided it wasn't going to try and make money, they'd go out of business. So would anyone else.
