Default Roddenberry wanted prequel in 1968?

I read in "The Art of Star Trek", that the Great Bird told the audience that he wants to make a prequel movie at the World Science Fiction Convention 1968 in Oakland. It should have been a story about Kirk and crew meeting at the academy... so it was his idea!? Since many people are agains prequels and Academy-stories, maybe this will change their minds about "violations" of GR's wishes...

What hes saying is Gene R wanted to do a prequel movie back in 1968, according to an article/book he read. The funny thing is Trek wasn't really so popular back then. But the fact he mentions this is to somehow calm the hard core that are against a prequel perhaps. That if this is seen as Genes blessing in some way.

Personally no matter what you say some folks are never pleased.

Interesting find though none the less....

In fact, TAS was supposed to be an Academy series. Not really prequel, though - it was supposed to be about kids - first year Starfleet cadets, maybe? - on a training mission aboard Enterprise, with an occasional cameo from main cast.

I'm glad they didn't go for it in the end, making a real Star Trek instead.

I don't think I would have enjoyed TAS as an Academy series.

Interesting that he had the idea back in '68 though, but yeah... there will still be haters.

You have to forgive NCC-73515, he just assumes the people on this thread know how to read

lol ... but, NCC-73515 that is interesting though. I am glad he did not go with that idea at the time. However, now it seems like a good idea to go back and see how the legends were like and how they got their start, and this new movie seems like that opportunity.

Exact page reference would be nice. It's not that I don't believe you but I have learned over the years to not accept every statement made as being true. If it's documented and can be verified then fine but I'm not going to just atke your word for it. I have that book and recall no such statement.

Well that makes me feel a little better about the prequel idea. Just as long as it is not bad like the Star Wars prequels, I guess it will be alright, and by the way, I am a new member here. Good to join up.
