I remember that book -- and it was phenomenally well written.

I'm one for the big stuff...Vulcans are utterly respectful of life and so would not eat meat or wear leather (or furs!!), Spock served with Pike for 11+ years before Kirk showed up....
Chekov is 12 years younger than Kirk.... Stuff like that.... I realize I'm going to be hit with a canon issue or two with the new film.

My canon is a bright future where mankind strives to improve itself and is no more motivated by greed and hate. Diane Carey contradicts my view of canon in her books with her conservative themes. In other words, I care more about content than the setting.

Interesting since in her Dreadnought the bad guys were out of control Starfleeters who wanted to use unrestrained military force to solve the Federation's problems with its neighbors.
I've found that in her books its a sense of "Yes there ARE going to be finding people out there who don't like us... So yes we need to be able to defend those things we cherish... BUT the power we use to defend those things MUST be carefully managed and used in great restraint lest we become that which we fear." But that is content worthy of continual discussion since only by questioning ourselves do we keep from blindness.

I don't wanna turn this into a political discussion and it is great that we have a lot of variety of view in the Trek universe be it canon or fanon. It is just my view that her work violates the very essence of what I consider quintessential Trek. For some its the setting, for some it's the content.

Would be a boring universe if we had all been assimilated into the collective.

Would be nice, then, if they'd go the full monty and put their own name on the mailbox and get this thing off Roddenberry's lawn.
