I think the reason star trek movies started going down after First contact was because ILM stopped doing the special effects its been so long since they did Insurrection I forgot.

I do slightly agree there, it always bothered me that in Insurrection the Ent E looked totally different to that seen in FC. Nemesis did give us an Ent E which was closer to the one in FC but is still didnt look the same plus it was full of enhancements such as new weapons and a tapered saucer section. This film is going to totally blow all other Star Trek films out of the sky with its visual effects and might even give the last star wars film a run for its money, iam so hyped for this film now roll on may

First Contact was the last star trek movie that used a physical model.

I do agree that the effects in Insurrection had something lacking in them, but that's all the effects in the film, not just the E herself. They were a noticeable notch down from FC, I just assumed it was because ILM were not the main providers.
I do look forward to having them back on board for Trek. |

While I didn't get my ducks in a row this time, I plan (i.e. hope) to be at ILM for to work on Star Trek 2.

I think the worst disaster to effects was when ILM didn't do Final Frontier, that's when I noticed it most. But yeah the effects didn't look quite as good in Inserection, never knew it wasn't ILM doing it.
I think that they should have kept the model at least for Insurrection, they've always looked better to me... It's only really now in the last few years that CGI has really caught up. |

I also noticed the effects-quality drop from FC to Insurrection. The effects of those floating things that shot isolinear tags were laughable. I thought that they looked so 'super-imposed' over the real background plate. Datas shuttle looked just as bad - jerky movements and all.
The nemesis effects were in a totally different league, even if it did fair poorly at the box office. |
