Well heck! Gary Mitchell was doing the "Force Lightning", mind reading, telekinesis... Everything but the lightsabre after only a few days and Kirk still survived and that was in 1966.

You know I never thoguht about that before.

You're absolutely right. Stargate took alot from Star Trek.

I think the only show that was truly original recently was Farscape.

You know it's not hard to believe that a great many people have never watched Star Trek. Simply because it's a sci-fi show. God forbid they might have to watch a Show about outer space and aliens. OH NO, The aliens are coming.

I had that discussion with somebody once, and their basic response was...

"Sci-Fi appeals to dreamers, people who are so infatuated with 'What could be' that they are completely oblivious to the 'Here and Now'. Its a waste of time, but you're one of them, so you wouldn't understand what I'm talking about."

As far as one sci-fi television show or movie "stealing" from another goes, I think there are only so many ways to make up aliens, ships, costumes, helmets, whatever. I have heard people say the Breen helmets look to much like Star Wars helmets, or now the Goa'uld are "bad trill". Well, how would you differentiate one symbiote from another? If an alien lives inside a person, then the comparison can always be made. If from time to time a ship design looks similar to that of another show or movie, so what? People do have influences in their lives and Trek and Wars will be two of the largest when it comes to sci-fi. Lucas himself was a Trek fan before making wars. He took many of the elements from fantasy type books and applied to them sci-fi. Was that stealing?

I have had people say similar things to me. My response is simple:"If it weren't for 'us' dreamers than there would be no innovation, no desire to improve the things we already have."

Remember the show "how Shatner changed everything", or something named like that? I think it was on the History channel. I had many non-Trek fans tell me they watched that show and that they had a different feeling toward us Trek fans after watching it.
