Timing is everything. 10-15 years ago, he would have been perfect. Then again, that long ago, Shatner would have wanted to play Kirk again.

Actually, no.

Scotty was born in 2222, McCoy in 2227, according to multiple sources.

Depending on which source you believe, Kirk was born in 2230 or 2233.

At most, Scotty could only be 10-11 years older than Kirk, or perhaps only 7-8 years older.

McCoy was at max 6 years older than Kirk, at minimum 2-3 years older.

Correct re: Scott being about 44 in the first season of TOS (circa 2266).

It would have been ''a lot of fun'' to have Sinise as McCoy, and if this picture had been set later in the ''timeline'' (whatever it might be now), he would have brought such a presence.

However, let's not prejudge Urban's take, or J.J.'s for that matter, sight unseen.

We had a lot of fun on the Star Trek New Voyages forums when news of the movie broke a couple years back. We did a lot of ''casting'' among which Sinise was put forward as McCoy. Some various ''high concept'' ideas were thrown around including Angus Macfadyen (best known as Robert the Bruce in Braveheart) as Scotty, Jessica Biel as ''Number One'' if she were an element. Interestingly enough, if Sigourney Weaver were much younger (or the movie took place much later), she would have been the perfect Number One (thinking Alien(s) not Galaxy Quest). Liv Tyler as Number One was another fun idea. If Kirk's first captain, Charlie Garrovick were to make an appearance; Ed Harris. And, if this movie had been later in the timeline, why not reunite Sinise with Hanks, with Hanks playing Spock?

Sinise could do McCoy in a heartbeat, he might even be to perfect, despite his actual age, He actually looks slightly Younger than Kelly did in TOS.
He definitely would have been My preferred choice, However, I am intrigued by the casting of Urban, He looks the part(although he could use bags under his eyes)
and Most of those who have seen footage with Him as Bones, seem to be giving Him praise.

So I'm all for giving Him a chance, and I'm eager to see His performance

He's too old, for cryin' out loud! This has been mentioned many times before. I love him as an actor and he would have been perfect for the role if it had been set sometime around the period when TMP took place. But the man is 53 years old now!

Besides, Karl Urban has received a lot of praise so far for his performance (and that only from a couple of scenes) so I think he was a wonderful choice as well.

But Karl Urban....in the trailer I didn't hear a southern accent.

I mean I hate to say it but I'm starting to see The Saint's point about all this.

I just pray this isn't some bastardized version of Trek meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator. It's starting to look that way the more I watch the trailer.

Seriously... how strong was McCoy's southern accent, really?! Most of the time I have to strain myself and/or really pay attention to pick up on it. Trip on ENT had a southern accent that you could cut through with a knife. But McCoy? Not so much.
