As long as debates can avoid labeling others as "not true fans" and such nonsense, agreed!

There are at least 6 threads on this 1st page about canon.
How many more will there be? Has no one got it that someone has punted canon away with this movie. It's not about canon any more it's about getting the audience...they're trying to make the fans a non issue and the canon doesn't matter to them if they make 300,000 in the first weekend.

Imagine if Trek is the only movie to come out that day. If it does well movies in the future won't want to go against Trek when the sequels come out.

Might I suggest a "Big canon debate" thread stickied at the top?

I'll still leave it unanswered. That's all....

That's not my point.
I don't care about how many threads there are.
Canon obviously matters but not in this movie. Don't look at this a trek movie...It's not...it's something new. Canon is irrelevant.
That is all, Ensign.

You may not agree with "canonites", but they are entitled to have their opinion just as "revisionites" are entitled to have theirs...
What's the issue? Kirk's age at the time of ship construction? Can he drive a car? These piddly things are all what they add up to. Again I can understand if McCoy or Kirk were killed off in the film then I'd have issues.

And your last sentence just makes me go, "Um, okay... yeah." If they're entitled to voice their opinions on how the ship is apparently built on Earth and that that is some HUGE canon screwup, I'm entitled to voice my opinion that such an opinion is fanboy nitpick.

OOOOOOOOH! OOOOOH! That hurt! You called me Ensign! Oh, oh, man, oh.

*wow*

Anyway, my question is how much is canon irrelevant? How much did Abrams change? Answer this in the most serious way possible, your royal Vice Admiralship....

That's right ensign. It just doesn't matter. The basic elements of Trek is all that needed. Basic...as in names...and pretty much that's it.

yeah audiences don't care about warp speed , and civilizations...just battle and Romulans in a good plot is all that's need to revive Trek from the Dead.
