I think that is not earth he is on becouse in the TOS Kirk spent part of his child hood off world (The Conscience of the King) he was to be about thirteen years old. That appears to be the age young Kirk is in the trailer.

Question is in the trailer when the young kirk is about to drive off the edge of the canyon do you think this is the canyon created by the xindi weapon from the Enterprise series ?

Cheers
I cant see the writers being that ignorant of the geography in Iowa. or enterprise.
If it was in Iowa Kirk would now that their was a canyon at the end of that road.

Their has to be a logical reason for their to be a canyon for Kirk to drive off of. I don't now if that would be considered a Star Trek pun or not.

Its a quarry. Kirk drives right by the sign on the right side of the gate which says:

DANGER
OPEN MINING PIT (not sure about the PIT, it could read QUARRY)

Frame grab attached: the sign is rather obscured by the dust but this was the best frame I could find. Highly enhanced contrast in attempt to clarify the letters.

The second word sure looks like "QUARRY" to me, given the motion blur. If it helps.

Is it a canon canyon that was cored out by a cannon? Is that cannon even canon?

The canon cannons cannae cope, captain!

Ahem.

Folks are saying it's a quarry, and I'm inclined to agree. I'm no expert, but it looks very much like it was carved out artificially. Now, some might complain about it - "but there's no quarry in Iowa!!!" to which one can only respond that it's the future, and all those colossal buildings we see in the trailer must've come from somewhere.

The pit where young James Kirk drives his car is the mining area where Starfleet Command has dug up the raw materials with which they are going to build the Starship Enterprise from. That is why Kirk survives and doesn't fall over the edge. The Living spirit of the Enterprise saves him knowing that he will be it's legendary Captian. LoL. Okay, maybe I'm reaching a bit. LoL.
