Default Should the baddie have been...

Klingon rather than Romulan?

I know the Romulan bit will probably work better with Nero trying to destroy Vulcan, because of the shared history of the 2 races.

I don't know about you, and I know they are now at truce with the feds, but when ever someone used to say ST to me the first thought into my head was Kirk and the E, the second was Klingons.

Would Klingons have been a better bad guy for this film? Or would that have been too obvious and put the non-trek fans off as it would be more E vs K?

JJ said somewhere that Klingons are kinda the typical Trek baddies and that he wanted to try something new (OK, not entirely new, Romulans were in 10 while Klingons were the villains in 3,6 and 7).
There have been much more Klingon than Romulan stories in every Trek series (besides TNG perhaps, if you ignore Worf) as well, so I think that there is a lot of potential for stories involving the Romulans and making them more epic, just like the Klingons. Widening the Romulan language is an indication that this is about to happen.
And as you said, there interesting element is their common past with the Vulcans, which was already interesting in ENT and also worked in different constellations like the Klingon-Romulan realtionship mostly explored in TNG.

Klingons are steryotypical for Trek fans. I remember in... I think 12'th grade, when FC first came out on VHS. Our teacher let us watch it, first reaction by most of my class was "Ugh. This is going to be sooo boring"

Needless to say Jenny (Who is still one of my best friends, lol) was FREAKED OUT by the Borg. Haha.
Everyone else LOVED the movie, aside from one of the "football guys", whose name I seriously cannot remember (but I do remember us not liking each other at all), and in all actuallity, he didn't even watch it, he was talking with his girlfriend. who at the time WAS TRYING TO WATCH IT. LMAO!

Ahh. good times.

Exactly this was the reason why they took Romulans. You expect Klingons.

No. Klingons should not have been the bad guys this new movie. I like that they are NOT Klingons, but I am not sure what to the think about the fact they are Romulans.

I personally think that the baddies should have been the Pakleds.

NO ONE EXPECTS THE PAKLEDS.

One main reason for making a Romulan the antagonist is to bridge back from the post-Unification era of TREK to the pre-TOS era. Klingons had been members of Starfleet since the TNG years, and thus were no longer functional anti-Federation villains in the 24th.

Yeah, but they wouldn't be taken seriously by anyone except for Trek fans.

Their chief weapon is surprise! And fear!

Their two chief weapons are surprise and fear and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope!

Among the Pakleds many weapons are such diverse elements as: surprise, fear, a fanatical devotion to the -- I'll come in again!
