Kirkboy smashes through a barrier of somesort, looks like it could be a building site of some sort, then falls into an obviously man-made desert abyss- otherwise known as Enterpise dry-dock, excuse the pun
Would this be too corny if he was sneaking around a top secret facility like a Starfleet shipyard? Intoduce us to the bones of the story, a skeletal outline of a ship in construction "My name is James Tiberius Kirk. And one day, all of this....will be..mine!"

Why would the Enterprise dry dock be in a stone quarry? Is this ship being carved out of limestone?

Hmmm, they created a quarry to build the Enterprise in, then because the workers got tired of not being able to look around the quarried out the rest of Iowa to the horizon, then they replanted it to look like Iowa used to? WOW! That's a lot of work! But of course not beyond the means of the Federation

I cant see the ship taking that long to build, maybe a couple of years maybe 5 at most
but not that long

No matter how long the time, showing a younger Kirk seeing how the ship he wants to command one day is built and invoking the impression that this is a great project and not a ship done in mass production is great drama and emphasizes the relevance of the big E.

Yeah. I very much like the idea that the Federation's early ships were finished by human hands. Built with time and effort and a labour of love. Not just vehicles churned out by industrial robots...

I didn't even think about that the canyon being part of the future ship yard.
That would explain why he did not now it was their.

Today it takes about seven years to build something that size on Earth but directing all of the solar systems resources in a emergency situation building it quickly is not impossible. The problem building it on Earth is gravity supporting those massive superconducting magnet in the nacelles require a massive structure. You would have to go straight down to bed rock to have a solid structure for the ship yard. Having that pit being the future home of the ship yard makes sense.
