Default JJ throwing the canon out with the bathwater?

http://fusedfilm.com/2008/11/editori...-canon-anyone/

This guy has an interesting view on JJ and canon. My thoughts are that if JJ was going to do an updated version of Trek why not jump farther into the future instead of going back and messing with established canon. Some will argue that things like Captain April never existed and Kirk wasn't on the Farragut, but these are accepted bits of canon that are going to be rewritten for the new Star Trek. Why stop there? Let's start an alternate universe b and wipe out everything from Wrath of Khan to First Contact?
Of course in the end the movie could just reset back to the beginning with no one remembering what happened, which has happened more than a few times with the time travel stories in the trekverse. I hope they didn't go to all the trouble of jacking up Trek to have the movie end with nothing happening or maybe that will be for the best and it will save canon and not throw it out the window.

For people who aren't very well versed in Trek lore, this is an all-new beginning for them. For people who have been deeply immersed in Trek lore, however, the little bits of continuity here and there are little easter eggs for you.

Still, I believe that the film will work best if people think of it as its own seperate production (which it is) and stop trying to shoehorn it perfectly into TOS. It's J.J. Abrams' version of Star Trek--or Star Trek 2009, if you prefer--and that's really all there is, IMO.

Can't wait for the toys to hit store shelves...

Interesting..... let's assume that, how does this fit into trek lore?

It's how it all started.

'Nuff said.

So we wipe out 40 years of canon and just start over?
I think I'm going to throw up.

Not to be mean, but throwing up can have beneficial side effect. Letting go of things that one doesn't necessarily need to carry can be great for the tummy.

If I had a penny every time someone assumes all canon is being thrown out, I'd have a fortune by now!!!

Because whereas TPTB were smart enough to recognize that TOS fans would come to the theaters for a TOS film, they obviously weren't smart enough to realize that you deliver what you promise, you do not bait-and-switch the fans.

And I've figured out exactly what it is about the look the whole thing that bothers me -- everything other than the uniforms is Star Wars prequel, not Star Trek. And we all know how well the Star Wars prequels did.

Maybe someone will cut together the first look at Ryan Church's "Organiprize" and Darth Vader's famously hilarious, "Noooooooooooooo!!!"

It is not as if JJ is going to steal every copy of every TOS episode and destroy them!
