Does it count if I've read the book first (which I plan to)?

Nope, we don't know any such thing.

Thats a good thought, but where did you get it that Pike is going to be Captian for most of the movie? Since he was Captian of Kelvin, which seems to be short lived? I think he will only have just a bit more than a cameo. Then you may know something about the moive I don't. Thanks!

As far as Chekov being aboard with Pike, how do we know he didn't serve with Pike before Kirk? Does anyone know if Chekov ever said Enterprise was his first ship he served on?

I am a huge fan of the Connery Bond movies.
With the Craig re-boot I was quite happy and just don't worry about things matching up
in the two timelines. Casino Royale was really good but I don't say well it really messes up Dr. No or From Russia With Love.
We are getting new TREK and I will just enjoy it for what it is. If the movie is good I will be happy and watch the future ones. If I don't like it then I won't see the future ones.
To criss cross all the continuity so it lines up perfect really is not possible especially if they are really starting at ground zero with the crew.
I've been a TREK fan for over 30 years and am not losing sleep over what we are getting.

Nothing says that Spock dind't become Pike's First Officer before Kirk took command. But in this case, I think they should use a female in the role of Pike's "Number One" for at least some resemblance to canon.

This is true. It seems that JJ and company have created a whole new universe that has no real relation to Star Trek TOS except for characters and ships, and put the Star Trek name on it. It is clear from certain points on the new trailer that JJ and co don't care about established Star Trek history. This may make for a good, entertaining movie, but it does not bode well for Star Trek as a whole. This movie is shaping up to be an "alternate universe" version of TOS that has nothing in common with the real TOS.

Captain Pike won't be killed. That would be really stupid. I know JJ doesn't give a targ's rear end about canon or established Trek history, but I don't think he'd change THAT. Killing Pike would completely eliminate "The Cage" and "The Menagerie". And I don't think that Chekov was part of Pike's crew. He was not referenced in "The Cage" or "The Menagerie". Also, it has been mentioned on many occasions in TOS and the Movies that Chekov is significantly younger than Kirk. That's why he's still and Ensign while Kirk is Captain when Chekov is introduced in season 2 of TOS. Sulu and Uhura...maaaaybe, but it would be a stretch.

How do we know Pike was captain of the Kelvin? He was the Captain of the Enterprise for about 11 years before Kirk took command (see "The Menagerie"). If Kirk doesn't take command of the E until close to the end of the movie, then it is logical to assume that Pike will command the E for most of the movie.

Possible, but not likely. Given the Chekov is much younger than Kirk.

I'm hoping that we'll see Number One at the very least as a background character. Perhaps, she'll die in a battle and Spock takes over?
