Default Number One?

Since Captian Pike is here are we to assume that his Number One will be here as well? I hope they PTB don't put Spock in that role, we all know that Pikes #1 was a woman. On that subject, I wonder if any of the characters from The Cage will be in this movie. It would be interesting to see the transisition. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't count on it, given how much of the history they are already changing. Chekov and Pike on the same ship??? C'mon...

I'm not too happy about this either. The whole idea of cadets practically manning the entire ship shortly after graduation....I mean, the Enterprise has always been considered "The" ship to be on, the flagship. Would you want a bunch of kids running the ship? I had hoped for a little more when it comes to the origin of the crew. This sounds a bit too thrown together.

I am back to being unhappy about this movie. Sure it might be cool. But even I don't like some of these canon issues. Wasn't there supposed to a "hardcore trekker" on the writing team? I wonder what "hardcore" means to them. He's probably watched a couple of the movies twice!!! OOOoooo....that's hardcore!

Ive got to say I actually agree here.

The trouble is to introduce ALL the characters and then give them each a story of how then end up together on the E would require more time than even an extended directors cut would allow. I don't think splitting 1 story into 3 ala LOTR would have helped this movie.

Sooooo. Whilst I agree that Spock should not be Pikes #1 (right away at least), that Robert April should be the 1st captain of E, and that Chekov et al should not be together right away...

I cannot see how else he could do this film. Well actually I can, he could start with Kirk in command with his regular crew. Trouble is, this would not introduce them all to the new audience or establish the point in the timeline where this is all supposed to be set. which would end up being another trek fan only film and would not do whatthe franchise needs.

Now whilst I understand that canon is important, I also believe that you sometimes have to do major surgery to keep a patient alive. If what JJ has done gives ST a new life then I am all for it. If it doesn't then the nay-sayers were right all along.

So long as we have Kirk, Spock, Chekov, Sulu, Uhura, Scotty, Bones and the obligatory red shirts, the Enterprise, Vulcans, Klingons and Romulans, Phasers, Disruptors, Photon Torpedos, Warp Drive and Transporters, they can portray it how they want. It may not be canon, but it should still be trek.

I doubt the term "number one" will be used. I'm sure it will be "first officer" or "executive officer".

We have to understand that we don't know yet what is the ship and what is Kobyashi Maru. We don't yet understand how things come about, let's please give it a chance!!! We don't know when Checkov comes in or for that matter, we really don't know when he came aboard the Enterprise in the series. We do know that he was promoted to the bridge at the beginning of the second season, but he could have been on board the Enterprise the first season. Let's not jump to conclusions because of a less than 2 minute trailer!!!

I personally think it's pretty safe to assume that Spock, Sulu, Chekov and Uhura are part of Pikes regular crew and that Kirk and McCoy are the last of the crew to board the Enterprise. Kirk has to prove his command abilities to all and that he is ready to take over as Captain when Pike is either wounded or Killed.

They can use them all. First/executive officer is the official title. Number one is a colloquial term used by the captain. Go on any Royal Navy ship and you'll hear the captain call is first officer "Number One" or "Jimmy", while crew usually call the captain "Boss" or "Skipper".
