Default "darkness and silence..."

Was it just me, or did anyone else notice a distinct lack of sounds in space during the trailer? Could just be an editing thing that's confined to the trailer, but it'd be a fascinating move if they decided to opt for scientific realism by turning down the volume in nature's vacuum.

I think it's just the editing. Dialogue, Music and 1 red alert claxon loop. Oh, and a creature's roar.

I missed that too...I will listen for it tomorrow when i watch the trailer over and over and over again on my computer, alienating my children and forcing my wife to leave me...

It would be cool if they did, but where would they stop? Wouldn't they have to get rid of the different colors of phaser beams that we see in "space" as well? lol

When I read the name to this thread I was thinking it was about that line McCoy has in the trailer, 'darkness and silence' kinda sounds like it.

I'm all for space battles without sound but in a Star Trek movie I don't know. The sounds of a photo torpedo firing or phasers are just so distinctive to Trek. The sounds of the Enterprise going to warp.

Is that what you were quoting Big D? Because I am looking forward to seeing that in the film....Urban delivered that line with alot of intensity!

I missed that, but then, have only watched online versions and obviously, not the BEST..so, tomorrow at WORK I will turn up the speaker and go for it....they can all just shove it!!!

My guess is Abrams will ramp up the volume because he is all about the visceral experience and not at all about accuracy.

Eliza, you slipped the "accuracy" jab when we weren't expecting it!

And try to see it on the big screen....it is SO much better!

Yep, I was quoting McCoy... it'd be odd to have a character directly mentioning space being silent in a movie with a lot of noisy action

It'd also be interesting to see how canon purists respond to something like 'silent space'. It it 'good' because it's scientifically accurate, or is it 'bad' because it disagrees with Trek history?

It would be bad because it would be annoying and boring....I mean, face it, more than 5 seconds of silence and my brain is screaming for anything....

There is virtually no chance I'll get to see this in a theater. I might get to see it on my BIG TV if it makes its way to Previews on Demand....otherwise, it's the computer.

In other words, if we are on the bridge, and a torpedo is fired, or we fire phasers, we don't hear the sound effects. Nor do we hear a ship explode on the viewscreen, right?

If that's the case, then i have to agree with Liv. We need to hear those sounds....otherwise we're just watching a silent movie!
