I have been wondering if JJ is going to make the Federation and Starfleet appear more diverse than the original series and movies. Have there been any confirmations that he will be using other Federation members besides humans and Vulcans?

Personally, I hope to see Andorians, Tellarites, and other Federation members in Starfleet. The biggest drawback of Star Trek has been its relative lack of diversity in its depictions of ship crews.

So, do we know anything about what aliens will be making an appearance?

I am with you on that, UnitedFederation. I hope that the fact J.J. was allways "more of a Star Wars kid" is an advantage for the new Trek movie when it comes to aliens. So far we spoted just one alien, am I right? On the photos showing the filming of the ceremony at Starfleet Academy there is a blue headed alien we never saw before. However, the overwhelming majority of Cadets is human.

In the end I guess the new movie will also show us a Starfleet consisting of humans for 90 percent. What we saw so far implies that.

As far as I know, all the Fed members have their own fleets.

I disagree with this statement. I believe the individual planets within the UFP do indeed have their own ships and distinct designs, I believe Starfleet is the defacto military/exploration unit for the UFP. Since Earth was the driving force behind the creation of the UFP, it would stand to reason that an Earth organization was chosen as the primary means for defense and expansion. Of course Starfleet had to become more than an Earth organization. Starfleet includes ALL species within the UFP, but remains headquartered on Earth.

I forgot to meantion that i hope to see more of the UFP diversity in this new movie, but NOT at the expense of telling a good story. Showing more aliens just for the sake of showing more aliens would be a mistake, in my opinion. That is why I hope ST:Titan is NEVER made into a series. The crew is TOO diverse. The special effects needed just to show the crew would limit good story telling ability.

I am not sure that your viewpoint is backed in the canon of Star Trek. The only time we see distinct planetary starfleets is during the pre-Federation era. The Earth Starfleet of Captain Archer's time is not the same as the later Federation Starfleet.

The United Federation of Planets main exploration/military arm is Starfleet. We have see Vulcans, Andorians, Bolians, and other species all in Starfleet.

I always chalked up the high level of humans in Starfleet to the fact that TV shows have smaller budgets for makeup. My hope is that a high budget movie like this one will have the extra funds to show how diverse the Federation really is.
