I haven't built models for a while, but I was really disappointed with the last time I looked at a Trek kit in my local store. It was a while back and I don't recall the manufacturer, but the box said that for all the ships, the paintwork was virtually done for you!!

I also remember spending hours picking the right shade of hull paint, and actual literal hours painting the windows in my D and E Enterprises. That's the fun of them!

they also used to specify exact paints for portions of the hull, and it came out looking horrible, had to go back and tone stuff down lots of times

I know, I never went with what they stated, I always looked through all the options and would pick another shade if I thought it would turn out better. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't!! My 'D' deflector dish was way too dark!

I never went with the paint scheme either. My Polar Lights refit enterprise (about 3 ft. long!) Was supposed to be a grey color. I just painted it an off-white that it looks like in the motion picture. I did not, however, paint the aztec patern. Way to advanced for me!

I actually got pretty good at airbrushing the right shades of blue on the Refit-E's deflector. Paint it a LIGHT LIGHT blue, shade in a slightly darker blue on the edge, then a very light blast of white in the center. The right amount of over spray gave it a good back lit effect. Same for the Impulse engines, yellow to red outside.

Polar lights went out of business, so we wont see any kits from them. Im thinking it will be a while for the major manufacturers make a model kit. Garage kits will probably be out first. Which is okay, usually garage kits are far supperior kits.

Polar Lights is back in business. In fact, they will be releasing a 1/350th scale Akira Class ship sometime in 2009.

It doesn't matter... With my skill levels, if they don't release any kits from the new film, I can always build my own.
