They even needn't to think of the NX or any intermediate steps.
They just had to take the Enterprise as basis with the one question determining Kelvin's design: How do we make a ship that looks cool, but also older and smaller than the Enterprise and that won't steal the Enterprise's show?

And so they made quite a simple design, but still special enough to get our attention.

That Kelvin's a charming wee ship. That lower nacelle is huge, far large than the engineering section. But with a glowing orange Bussard collector, for the sake of authenticity

But the site itself is quite nice, I actually now that I've seen slightly more of the Kelvin, don't think it looks quite as ugly as that original view suggested. I can indeed see it fitting into the design lineage just fine.
