The image shows no branding anywhere on the ship...
You can read NCC on one of the nacells but...

USS ENTERPRISE and 1701

Are no where to be found.... Curious, no?

How can anyone even mention canon after reading the descriptions of the scenes depicted. Kirk and Pike on the same ship? Checkov serving under Pike when he should have been in grade school at the time? People in exile? What makes this worse than Batman or any other re-imagined franchise is that there was so much established history in the Star Trek universe that has just been blown away. Reading the EW and GEEK DEN articles, I had to wonder what this actually was.

Where would be the canon which contradicts Pike and Kirk ever being on the same ship at the same time?

Was there a film or series made about the transition handoff of command from Pike to Kirk? We saw some before and after moments of Pike's command -- briefly -- but I don't recall an episode of TOS which showed the handoff. What in 'canon' exists to be contradicted exactly?

Seems a bit like saying Kirk and Decker could never be on the same ship at the same time.

Here's what Star Trek said:

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?
KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.

Now...that is very, very vague...Think about how politicians parse words....this could be anything from a quick handoff to an extended adventure. It seems Abrams has elected to go with the latter and I personally, thank him for that! I wanted to see more of Captain Pike.

A lot of things may come down to different interpretation of open phrases such as the one Eliza highlighted, in which case canon may not be violated, just established to be different from how it was previously assumed.

No. You can see "701" on the bottom of the hull behind the deflector dish if you blow the picture up a bit.
