Default Kevin Smith on JJ Abrams

Writer-director-actor Kevin Smith alluded in an interview with a Los Angeles-based morning radio show that he has seen J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek film and was impressed with what he saw, according to TrekMovie.com. Smith said that he couldn't talk openly about the top-secret screening while on the air with KROQ's Kevin and Bean on Aug. 22, but he did reassure fans who might be concerned about the reboot that the franchise is in good hands.

"The stars absolutely trek in this film," Smith said in answer to a leading question about the screening. "It is fantastic. Anybody who was worried doesn't need to be worried about this film I cannot talk about. ... It was in very capable hands. The director did a phenomenal job, the director and his crew. Top-notch cast, and the guy that plays the lead is an instant star. That dude is going to be so famous. He is so wonderful. He picked up a role that I would say is pretty challenging for someone to step into the shoes of, because it is a role that has been played before many times by the same guy."

When asked if he would ever consider taking on a franchise like Star Trek himself in the future, Smith responded that he'd be wary of such a high-profile project.

"I would not like to be the guy," he said. "In the case of something like Star Trek, it would take a really insanely talented filmmaker-storyteller. Like in the case of Star Trek, J.J. Abrams. So leave it to the people who are best equipped for it. I am just the guy who should be watching those movies."

Depends on how you view Kevin Smith - I happen to like him and his films, so his endorsement is encouraging for me.

I've read Smith's earlier comments, but this is the first time I've seen these ones. Very promising, especially what he says about the strength of the performances and responding to fans' fears and concerns.

It's interesting how he talks about "the guy that plays the lead"... he's probably not allowed to talk about specific actors and characters, and he might also be deliberately vague here. I assumed he's talking about Chris Pine, but there's also the chance he's talking about Quinto's Spock.

Ah, i see Mr. Smith pays homage here to Star Trek's well known Shakespearian side. In the words of the immortal bard, much ado about nothing. Thank you Mr. Smith, for being as vague as you could possibly be. We appreciate that.
