So, this is a new interview, and at this point they've only gotten 50% of the sfx shots in? And it was supposed to be released in a little over a month originally..... So either they were NOT "on schedule" as they originally claimed (thus being the real reason the release date was pushed back) or the creative staff decided to redo/update some or all of the sfx for whatever reason. Thoughts?

It's weird, since Orci's comment about sfx doesn't fit at all with information we got a few weeks ago. The interview almost reads like it was done a while ago but published now... references to the FRINGE pilot and all.

I don't think they are behind at all. I think when the film got changed to a Summer movie, they have let up on getting things done. If the movie date was still Dec 25, you can bet it would be ready.

It's also possible they simply took advantage of the extra time to finesse some of the shots even further.

I agree that this is normal considering the release date of May. I also think we may not see the "final" trailer this early. Alot of movie to come and go before May.

Visual effects are a funny thing.

Many of the effects could be in the latter stages of production, with about 50% of the shots fully completed.

Many of the effects are likely to be a different stages, with most of the work done (Planning, timing, pacing, most of the elements ready for compositing etc.), then all of a sudden, the final versions of the shots come in all at once, at a rapid pace, near the end of post production and editing schedule.

Sometimes, everything ir done but for the final rendering of some elements, and when the compositing is done, there it is.

50% is potentially a very misleading and difficult to assess value where opticals are concerned.

I think that interview might be rather old, since I remember hearing about 50% completed for the effects months ago.
