My theory is that before the "command hand off" Kirk is assigned to spend a short time onboard with Pike in command to observe the crew and get a feel for the situation. It's supposed to be a quick, simple mission...think Generations.....Pike is captured and Kirk goes against the wishes of the Second in Command (which should not be Spock!!) to stage a rescue.
I disagree about the command handoff unless the rest of the cast have been serving under Pike and Kirk is the only one to be added to the rest of the crew. Otherwise why are they wearing full uniforms?

And in the shuttle shot featuring McCoy and Pike, we see them clearly wearing the red cadet uniform and heading for an assignment, why isnt McCoy wearing his blue uniform if he is already part of the Enterprise Crew?

And why is the pod in a hole in the first place?
Pods in the hole because it crash landed is my guess....

Presumably an escape pod entering a planets atmosphere would build up some friction heat, and landing on snow/ice would punch down deeper than a cold object would simply through impact. A guess.

My theory would be that McCoy is joining the crew at the same time Pine is doing his "observation" for want of a better word. McCoy and Pine are cadets when they are on the shuttle coming to the ship, McCoy becomes part of the crew so dons his blue uniform, Pine is not officially Captain, so is in the black uniform.

My theory behind Kirk in a black uniform:

It helps explain his actions years later in the TOS episode, "The Enterprise Incident."

My theory behind Kirk in a black uniform:

It's after Labor Day.

LOL!

Seriously, though, I think it's simply an alternate tunic, not an undershirt or an indication of "trainee" (or other) status. It's "relevance" to the story could be that Kirk purposefully wears it to flaunt his rebellious nature (everyone else running around in full duty uniform, Kirk refusing to do so and instead wearing this).

1- Enterprise attacked by Nero.

2- Future Spock puts him into a lifeboat, in order to keep him alive (to make sure the timeline isn't messed up).

3- Future Spock and the Enterprise are captured by Nero.

4- Lifeboat crash lands on ice planet.

5- Kirk crawls out, reaches the surfface, looks up at the sky and shouts "NEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

6- Kirk eventually finds Nero, kills him with extreme prejudice, saves the day.

The END.
