Ending months of speculation by fans, David Tennant officially announced his intention to leave Doctor Who at the end of the series of four "mini-movies" to be aired by the BBC in 2009 through early 2010. When the show resumes its normal schedule for Series 5 in 2010, it will feature a new Doctor, the 11th incarnation of the renegade Time Lord.

Four good years... that's a fine run, in my opinion. Well, three years so far, though 2009's sure to be brilliant too. As others have said - it'll be sad to see him go, but also exciting to find out who the new Doctor will be. Maybe he'll be a little less... hyper? Personality changes slightly with each regeneration, after all

I heard of this on the radio! I have been anticipating (but not wanting) this announcement for a while...

I think though that his decision is perfectly allowable, four years is a good length - long enough for the fans to learn to love him, but short enough so that he does not grow tired of the role (example - Tom Baker...)!

They're going for sex-appeal/ratings- looking at younger people. I'd love to see someone else in their 40s or so.

in this year's Christmas special! And Steve Moffat as head writer! Since he was at the helm of the best (and most nightmarishly terrifying xD) episodes of the revived series, I think we're in for some real treats in the years ahead.
