Default why did klingons have ridges?

I know this was in an episode, but I don't really have the time or money to find it. What was the explanation given?

A Virus was Accidentlly created, while trying to use tech on human clones, to create Klingon Augments.

Enterprise disappeared from TV screens in my country before we got to those episodes, so I cheated and looked it up on Wikipedia.

The explanation is basically this, right?
The Klingons found out about a group of augmented humans who'd fled after the Eugenics Wars, and tried to improve their own combat prowess by replicating those 'enhanced' genes. Unfortunately, the mutations ending up becoming a plague, spread uncontrollably by the viral vector they were using to carry the new DNA. Their scientists were left with a sample of human DNA that would eventually create a cure, but Phlox reckoned it would take about a hundred years or more... Thus explaining why the Original Series Klingons have 'human' foreheads, but they're all back to 'normal' by the time the movies roll around.

Have I got that kind of right?

They have the blood of KHAN in them
The nice thing about that two-parter is that it does not merely give an in-universe explanation for crunchy-smooth-crunchy (in the 22nd, 23rd, 24th century, respectively) Klingons, but also explained why the TOS Klingons were deceitful andcowardly instead of honourous and bold, it was the human genes that made them thus.

Because they are actually potato chips. And, as we all know... ruffles have ridges.

the Klingons with bumps are the true Imperial Klingon species. the others were genetic experiments to fit into other societies but they were looked down upon and saw as inferior eventually, now they'd like to forget them.

oka this was the reason before this other explaination.

human-fusion klingons were used to infiltrate, as were romulan-fusions...this is like old old excuses for the alternate klingons
