I like Smith's thoughts on films and film-makers - he's never afraid to be outspoken, and he'll unashamedly indulge in fanboy-ism when it suits him.

I'm a little concerned that his praise for Trek is relatively minor compared to what he's got to say about Watchmen, but it could just mean that the interviewer was more interested in the latter film.

When he says that he hasn't enjoyed a Trek movie this much since TWOK, though - I can't help but wonder whether he means he liked it more than TWOK, or just that it's comparable or the 'next best' one...
Still, praise is praise, and I'm glad the movie's impressing people with fairly high standards.

I'm not really bothered by the idea of 'rebooting' the series. It's worked with Bond, and plenty of other films that have come out during the 'nostalgia/re-make' phase of the last five or so years. It doesn't mean that the last forty years of Star Trek are gone - they're still there, and still stand on their own merits. But by 'rebooting' a parallel continuity, they can do genuinely interesting things with the established characters, all without seriously deviating from the precedents that have been set. Going back to basics, making it accessible and fresh again. Because the current Trek continuity - the 24th century crowd - has become (for the most part) anything but creative, accessible, and engaging.

I've always thought Kevin Smith was a witty and funny guy (at least in his interviews. I'm not a big fan of his movies), but I really don't give his reviews much credence. He's always been on the other side of the aisle when reviewing movies. Although, he's nowhere near as bad as that guy over at aintitcoolnews. Now there is a guy who is a complete mystery to me....

Maybe not 40 years but closer to 10, the fatal error IMO was allowing Nemesis/Enterprise to air.

The fatal error was allowing B&B control of Voyager and Enterprise. I don't know if they were involved in the movie though.

Here is a link to a Memory Alpha summary of an AICN report of someone who claims to have read the tentaive script, so it should be taken with the usual scepticism, AICN is not necessarily the most reliable info source:
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Star..._The_Beginning

I don't think one can judge whether this would have been a good movie or not, based on the draft, but from a business perspective it was too risky, because:
First because it is too close to ENT which was cancelled, second because it is untraditional (liek DS)) in terms of no starship and crew, third because it is designed as several movies.

I think a lot of us would have liked to see a movie or several movies involving the Earth-Romulan Wars, an epic story which would have sparkled interest among all kind of Trek fans and non or not-yet fans
