TOS script stated it was an Earth-Romulan war, but I could easily see that changing and wouldn't have any issues with such a change.

If it was the "Romulan-Earth" war that started in 2156 between the Romulan Star Empire and the United Earth, that eventually lead to the end of the war with the treaty of Trianguli and the formation of the neutral zone in 2160. According to canon history, that would make the Romulan-Earth war almost 100 years before Kirk gets the enterprise... So Im thinking it might not be the Romulan-Earth war, but maybe just one of Nero's attempts at changing history with the Kelvin as its target. But who knows....

Edit: just found this in an article, don't know how accurate it is... "An early concept for a proposed eleventh Star Trek film would have revealed the beginnings of the Earth-Romulan War. However, this concept has since been scrapped."

USS Titan orbiting Romulus...
Last scene: Kirk saying "...but now, a new task. A probe - out into where no man has gone before (insert WNMHGB title music here)"

The Earth-Romulan war should have been touched on by Enterprise if they had not canceled the show.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone thought about the whole Romulan angle on this movie. According to the TOS episode, "Balance of Terror", no human or Federation ally had ever seen a Romulan up to that point. And Kirk and crew were very surprised to find that the Romulans looked like Vulcans (Spock's father, to be exact...haha). Anyway, to be consistent with canon and established Star Trek history, none of the non-Romulan characters should have been allowed to see the Romulan villains. There were a couple of episodes of ENT that dealt with the Romulans and they were filmed in such a way that the audience got to see the Romulans, but the Enterprise crew didn't. I sure hope they filmed this movie like that. Or else it will completely throw the history of the Star Trek universe out of whack and make "Balance Of Terror" non-existent.

Well since that's probably the first thing that every fan thought as soon as Romulan presence in the film was revealed, I expect the writers and JJ know they will have to deal with this and explain how it could be that by 'Balance of Terror' the reveal was a surprise to the crew.

It's possible that the crew never find out what race the bad guys are so they never make the connection that romulans look like vulcans if they see them. They might assume that they are just crazy vulcans.
