Default I think the new film is not entirely a prequel (possible spoilers)

If you think about it, the new film is not entirely a prequel. Yes, it will focus on Kirk's beginnings with his crew, however let's not forget about Nimoy being in the film. I hear that the film is going to begin in the TNG era, with Ambassador Spock negotiating on Romulus. However, when Nero goes back in time to kill Kirk and take over the Federation, Older Spock will have to follow him in order to set things right. So, the reality of the film will be TNG, yet it will dominantly be in the TOS era. So, for those of you thinking that this will be a pointless film, keep your minds open. Again, all this im sure is subject to change, yet it would make sense since they are using Nimoy, who will just look older since 1991.

There are always possibilities, but keep in mind that what we hear may not be accurate, due to the secrecy kept over the film... what we see in the film may be nothing like what we hear.

I'm not convinced this Romulans and Spock time travel story we're hearing about is for real. It might be disinformation being put out by Abrams, or somebody else is just making it up and laughing at us all for buying into it. It just doesn't make sense if this movie is gonna be a reboot to try and jumpstart the Trek franchise to do a story like that.

Then why keep Nimoy? I mean, if we are going to see him as the older Spock, it will have to be a time after "Unification, Part II" or Nemesis.

Who says? This could take place post-2293 but pre-TNG. We don't know how long Spock has been on Romulus, do we?

No, but Nimoy has certainly aged since 1991. So, it wouldn't be chronologically correct to have it take place pre TNG with an older looking Nimoy.

Makeup and CGI can work wonders.....but only to a point (beyond which believability will be shot right out the window....)
