I think Indy tried to be more "tounge in cheek," and tried to return to what made Radiers work so well.

In some places, it works, in others, like your example, it doesn't.

I am one of those who likes Last Crusade more than Raiders, not at last because of the humour, that's probably why I had no problem with the fridge scene in the fourth movie.
It was a fine movie, perhaps not as good as the first or the third one, but still much better than Temple of Doom IMO.

Knowing that there is a fridge in the fourth Indy hardly spoils anything. I knew that ... were the villains and that the plot was about ... and that did not spoil anything for me (perhaps because one can figure it out after ten minutes)

It was one of those films where you could not AVOID knowing in the first five minutes!
