It's a "way out there" design. I'm not saying it's ugly but it's really far, far advanced. I almost expect the crew members to look like the alien creatures at the conclusion of A.I. Artificial Interlligence.

Im sure they just wanted to get away from the usual as much as possible.

If you were to show 1968 TOS Ent fans some of the new designs these days they would just say "Well that sure looks.... different". They might even ask where the deflector dish is and what those big blue areas are for.
