The Enterprise D was supposed to last for 100 years before a refit!

The Enterprise-D had the capability of lasting 100 years, assuming it underwent a major shipwide refit and upgrade every 20 years, but the actual age of a ship depends on the kinds of missions it undertakes and how much wear and tear shortens its operational lifespan, IMO. In the "All Good Things..." alternate future, the Enterprise-D was so beat up that Starfleet wanted to decommission her after only 30 years of service...

I think the real Enterprise-J may come earlier than the 26th-Century, but it could also come much later if one or two of the interim ships lasts long enough to be decommissioned rather than destroyed or lost in action...

Also, you have to take into account how much time a ship spends at warp. Even with baryon sweeps and refits, a ship that does impulse patrol and survey missions will last longer than a ship that spends more than 60% of it's life at warp. And since every E we've seen is a front line fighter, running across the galaxy at full warp most of it's life then we could be at J sooner than you think.

I fixed up I think the only decent picture of her. At least that I've seen. I'd like to know more what the official ventral side looks like.

^^^
There isn't one. Fans have been forced to make up ones of their own.

God, that's an ugly ship...didn't even bother to get rid of NX-01's nav def dish on the bow of the saucer, nor the spotlights on the dorsal cargo door hatches...

The J certainly is an odd ship, but there's something intriguing about it that makes me want to see official artwork at some point in the future.

Slight necropost I know, but it's still on the first page so it doesn't count.

Anyway, about that ventral side...

Some other nice shots...

This design is another of those ones that made me think - "I take back everything I said about the NX-01" arrrgh!

I know it was only seen for the brief second or so, but for crying out loud, at least make it look, well, cool!

I have no idea how you see the J as anything but cool. It's gorgeous!
