Now:
touch-screens are every where, and are more reliable than buttons. our phones even have them and have more capability than kirk's communicators while being much smaller. our laptops can likely do more than the Enterprise's main computer could, and can sound like real people, not with those weird techy voices we thought they would.

Let's face it, we've nearly passed the future 200 years in advance. Gene Roddenberry did what was right: he captivated the audience of the 1960's. But in 2008 we are no longer amazed, and obviously to appeal to us, Star Trek is going to have to get a major face-lift. I'm sure JJ Abrams and his crew are well aware of this, and those few fuzzy shots of the new bridge look nothing like the original. This is a good thing.

I don't think this movie needs to be limited by what was "cool" 40 years ago. Canon definitely shouldn't be brushed aside, but visual canon will need to be bent a bit. I think we need to accept that our pristine image of canon as a Bible needs to be let go of. Star Trek can maintain continuity without being restricted.

So, what do you think?
I agree 100% Could not have put it better.

I agree and would say there is not a doubt that this will be the attitude of Abrams and co.

Post Poll

With respect, I really don't agree with any of the poll choices. Updating the Enterprise does make sense, it is only logical that the ship gets a facelift to make it appear more detailed on HD screens, especially at 1080p. Either that or you would need a HUGE model which is alot larger than the 1960's model...that one was 14 feet and still looked small.

I support the ideology that an artist could make changes to "mise en scene", as they see appropriate...this is individual artist license. From what I can see, the Enterprise looks wonderful, and I cannot wait to see more of it.

I am reasonably sure it is not Gabe's design, althought it would make it a good ship for another era or universe, it is too much departed from canon.

We are all assuming that this ship is the same one in TOS, it may or may well not be. Who knows what damage a ship could have taken in between the timeline of the current movie and the TOS episodes...there could have been a couple of refits before the TOS ship. We all must remember that Captain Pike was in command of the Enterprise for 14 (approx) years before Kirk took command...alot of things could have happened. It is a leap to imagine that TOS The Cage was at the end of Pike's command, but that could be true.

I trust Director J.J. Abrams' vision of creative license and I haven't even seen the ship yet...lol. From what I have heard, we will not be disappointed. That my friends, is the life-blood of Star Trek...."Boldly going where no ONE has gone before", "To seek out stange new worlds...", exploration is wonderul!

Perfectly put.

The Original Series in the '60s stunned its viewers in its day.

Let's let this movie stun its viewers on Dec. 25th.
