Default Those Whacky Euros at CERN

Has anyone else been following this story? It's funny that I was never nervous about nuclear war or the whole Y2K thing, but the idea that someone could just very remotely possibly cause a black hole to form on Earth makes me twitchy.

I remember hearing someone say that being sucked into a black hole "would take forever", which makes me twitchy too. Wouldn't it be more likely it would be instantanious?

I'm pretty sure you have a much better chance of being struck by lightning or being eaten by a shark then you will ever have to worry about the LHC creating a black hole which sucks up the Earth.

oh, hey....two threads....won't matter one whit after the black hole, will it?

A guy was killed by a shark off the coast less than a mile from where I work this year....

So...not thinking those are great odds, Mission!

Also, since this is a place where I can assume some appreciation for Science Fiction Literature...everyone go read EARTH by David Brin...it deals with a particle acclerator creating micro black holes which apparently don't worship Stephen Hawking so find a stable existence orbiting the earth's core where they occassionally cause problems of a fairly destructive nature....

But, find it and read it fast because they fire that puppy off tomorrow and after that...well...

Depends.

Anyhow, the switch was flicked and no-one has appeared to have vanished - will the doomsayers change their mind or revise their schedule to destruction? Stay tuned for more on that story later...!
