When it comes to storytelling, one of my major influences is Blake Snyder and his excellent story structuring methodology known as "Save The Cat!"
According to Snyder, and this has been borne out in my viewing and writing experience alike, films fall into a different set of genres than the casual viewer is aware of.
For example, romantic comedies and buddy cop comedies are actually the same genre, known as "Buddy Love."
Star Trek is in the same genre, roughly, as The Magnificent Seven or Jason And The Argonauts -- the "Golden Fleece."
Jaws and Nightmare On Elm Street are both "Monster In The House" stories.
"Now I did a job -- and got nothin' but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character, so let me make this abundantly clear: I do the job... and then I get paid. Go run your little world."
