Late to the game on this one. I went ahead and skipped the other posts, (I will read them later) so I could get my two credits in.

FanWriter45 is right. ALIEN and Aliens are apples and oranges.

ALIEN was great because it was a sci-fi/horror film unlike any we'd seen before, and many b-grade movies modeled themselves after it. (Humanoids from the Deep and Creature come to mind...although there are many more.)

Aliens, to me, was a perfectly logical follow up. I mean, yes, the aliens are big, bad, and scary, and all too visible...but, it also avoided being a rehash of the original (which the third and fourth films ended up being). Aliens was a war movie set on an alien planet, and the aliens were the Viet Cong essentially. The characters were a great mix. It was a great way to show that the aliens were frightening, but not unstoppable, and more than a match for the heavy firepower the Colonial Marines brought in. The director's cut of this movie is nothing short of awesome....restoring many cool scenes that truly added to the narrative.

Alien 3 actually grew on me. When my mom and I went to go see it in theaters, we came away a bit underwhelmed, but with repeated viewings on VHS, it did actually grow on me. And watching the extended cut on DVD in the Alien Quadrilogy set was enlightening, and actually made it a different film altogether. Although it was set in a prison colony cum monastery, it did manage to capture some of the claustrophobic feel of the first film, but I think what killed it for me was the alien, the way it was presented....sometimes CGI, sometimes model.

Alien Resurrection was trying to be a mix of the first two films, and didn't really succeed at either. It's a good movie for popcorn, but it just doesn't reach the heights like the first two. The story was written by Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly/Serenity), so the typical Whedonesque humor was there, and if you notice the characters of the Betty (Elgyn, Johner, Call, Christie, etc) you kinda see the groundwork for the crew of the Serenity in Firefly. I also wholeheartedly agree with FanWriter45 that the hybrid alien was a real waste.

AvP was alright. Nothing special, and it monkeys around with the ALIEN timeline, but it was a cool popcorn flick. I think it didn't do so well because it was a PG-13 release based on two very R rated properties.

AvP:R was better, in my opinion, although it did have that juvie-horror feel of the Jason/Michael Meyers movies at times. It held nothing back....no one was safe, not even small children....and it felt more like ALIENS at times. It's been said that if there is a third AvP movie, it might most likely be set in space....and I hope it involves the Colonial Marines. The comic books that came out years earlier, and the two PC games of AvP were much better than either of the AvP movies though, and those are the models that the movies should've based themselves upon.

Personal opinions, only.
