One thing that has always sparked my imagination. is if we could build a constitution class vessel what would it cost?
So work with me here. We have all the technology warp cores, artifical gravity, impulse etc... Structure:1 trillion warp core: 2 trillion including nacells Computer core: 600 million Extra vessels (shuttles):200 million Internal Transportation (turbo lift):50 millon ok lets see that comes to 3,850,000,000,000.00 u.s. dollars This is all just for fun feel free to calculate it as you see fit. I'm actually hoping a hardcore fan will break it down in more detail. Looking foward to your post. Last edited by jb42682 : 09-01-2008 at 06:58 AM. |

Since none of these technologies even exist, it seems a bit ridiculous to try to total up completely arbitrary costs associated with them.
You say a widget costs a billion and a half dollars, your buddy says it costs a smackillion, and yadda yadda. Let's start with something a little less arbitrary, if you want the real s**ts and giggles of this exercise. Let's assume -- just for fun -- that the hull plating of a Constitution class ship is titanium. In the story, of course, it isn't -- might as well be Wonderflonium for all we know -- but let's say it is just 'cause we can actually arrive at a real cost if we use a real material. Now we just need somebody to calculate how much titanium it would take to skin a Connie, cost per cubic foot and voila: still an insane number -- but now at least a vaguely real insane number.

According to MemoryAlpha, NCC-1701 would carry a total of 12 shuttles, so they would cost a damned sight more than a paltry $200millon in total - heck, the F-35 cost $83million each, and the Typhoon Eurofighter is over $122mil

I think the simplest answer would be that at any current rate you care to use, it would be utterly unaffordable period. At least every country in the world would have to chip in to pay for it!!

They can't all even do the ISS, let alone the Enterprise!
