Post Uhura and Kirk

There was no relationship between Uhura and Kirk. In Plato's Stepchildren, they were forced to kiss each ither, which made for many headaches in the Studio offices. However, it was Janice Rand who was almost raped by Bad Wolf Kirk in that episode. Everyone got that?

They'll have someone for Kirk, and if there is a God, her name will be Ruth or Carol. They'll have someone else for Uhura.

No, it'll be that woman from Star Trek IV -- you know, the whale movie?

How could it possibly be Dr. Gillian Taylor?

Gillian should still technically be in the 20th-Century at this point...

But in regards to Uhura, I doubt she'll be Kirk's love interest (but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a brief flirtation between her and Scotty, though). But more than anything, I think they're going to play her up as a more of a key character in Kirk's crew...

This I could see in the film!

Here's a thought- she's seen having to choose between a man she has already loved and her career- by accepting assignment to the Enterprise. By choosing the latter, she is accepting the fact that she will be without love for at least a long time. I know, a definite downer but it would introduce us to some of the character's history. And look on the bright side... it would mean she's single!

DC Comics actually did that exact same thing with Uhura twenty years ago or so in their version of how Kirk's crew first came together...

It's definitely a good idea.

Another idea, somewhere in all the various interviews Nichelle Nichols mentioned that J.J. Abrams wished he could cast her as Uhura's mother. That couldn't be done because of the writier's strike. However, what if the character exists already in the story, just not as an "onscreen" character? Perhaps Uhura reacts visibly to a letter from her mother (because, mother and daughter would engage in that already archaic practice as more emotionally satisfying than their words being sent over electronics).

Mother doesn't want her to take a position on a starship. Mother wants her to stay on earth where she can get married and experience the joys of motherhood herself.

Just a thought.

I think that anything that creates more depth to the characters is good because that's the one thing we got very little of in TOS. Oh, Chekov has a brother.... no wait, he doesn't.... oh who cares...
I'd love to get more background on them all, besides just Kirk and Spock, whom we already know a lot about (relatively at least). I think that's more important than wondering if Finnegan is gonna be torturing Chris Pine or if we see Gary Mitchell pointing Carol Marcus Kirk's way.
