At any rate, you are right when you say that the pIqad “a” is pronounced like the “a” in “Khan” or “Bahn.” It's the same sound as in the words “Fußgang,” “acht,” and “ball,” but in western American, the vowels in “but,” and “can” are all totally different sounds. Here's the Mirriam Webster pronunciation for “ball.” This is the same sound as the pIqaD “a.” Here's the Mirriam Webster pronunciation for “but.” This is not the same sound as in “ball.” Here's the Mirriam Webster pronunciation for “can.” This is yet a third sound, distinct from the other two. Also, here's the Mirriam Webster pronunciation for “open,” as I indicated earlier. This is the same as the pIqaD “o.” Anyway, the KLI has examples of all of the sounds at their “The Sounds of Klingon” page. One needs only to click the pIqaD to hear an .AU sample of the sound, so re-creating the sounds should be easy enough. Cheers, -AJBlue98 |

Nice chart NCC. Does anyone have a chart for the Romulan language?

The webster links confirm my statements.
Like I said, ball contains [ɔ], while but contains [ʌ]. The US ball is not the Klingon ball! Klingon a is always [a] Perhaps you notice that the o in open is different from the o in or. The English not would be written nat in Klingon.

In the case of a Klingon instructor it would be a ball and chain or an axe.
NCC: Thanks for the update. Maybe after STXI we'll know more about the Romulan language - but perhaps not. We'll see. |

The only bit of Romulan language I know is this:
You hold up a pen or some object and shout "IT'S A FAAAAAAAAAKE!" ![]()
