Yup....when you look at the movie characterizations of actual people that really worked, you often wouldn't think the actor looked the part....but a good actor inhabits it and captures something inside the person.

One possible issue is that these aren't real people, they are characters to begin with....so, it's probably a harder challenge, but that still makes it an acting challenge.

Acting. Looks is a bonus. Mostly I think it's important they cast good actors who are willing to undertake the commitment to be in Star Trek. It's not easy, what we ask of these people. They need to be up to it.

The acting can be great but if the story is bad than the movie will fail. Story first then good acting. Although it would be interesting to see Chris Pine try Shatnerisms.

They would not cast unattractive actors in the movie simply for marketing.

Marketing in any business is never about a one of fix. That is it's not one thing gets the result you want.

Marketing is a step process. That is getting your potential clients to take a step, then another until you can get them commited.

Great looking actors is one of those steps. It will get people looking who otherwise would not.

Once they are looking some will commit but you need more hooks for others to then take the next step. So an interesting story or a great concept.

Great looks is one of the early steps to create interest. Zoe Saldana, great choice because she looks great and can follow up with great acting. Jessica Alba again would have pulled interest on her looks alone, her acting would have been ok.

So simply as a smart business decision you would want good looking actors.

Even for ugly betty they had to cast a pretty girl.

I agree that looks are a bonus. There needs to be a shadow of recognition when you see Kirk, or Spock, but the true test will be when Pine says "Captain on the bridge." or "Spock, analysis." We need to get the chills when Spock, Bones, and Kirk beam down to a planets and converse with each other. We may not need... Shatnerisms... just because he talks... very... interestingly.
