Default The Symbol we always see. Only command?

The Enterprise symbol here on the top of the forum and on the posters and in the teaser... they're only command symbols. Where's science, medical and engineering?
Or could it be that they use the Cage/WNMHGB version? I believe they only had the star symbol back then...

I know it's been discussed elsewhere but besides the command, science, engineering and medical symbols I'm really hoping there'll be unique insignia for the various ships of the fleet.

Since the Enterprise symbol was also on the SFA 'lampposts'... and the symbol is all over the entire uniform tunic... I doubt they'll have specific ship symbols, which would be the first real trouble I'd have with the film.

JJ has mentioned the delta shields, and says they're more "stylized" than before, but as I understand it, all of the departments still have their own symbols. As I'm sure you've also heard, the uniforms are printed with mini delta shields as part of the cloth patterning, rather than regular stitch...

Rather similar to the new costume in Superman Returns, where there are little "S" shields in the design...I hadn't heard this, very interesting

It's gonna be tougher for fans to make their own costumes now.

I think it also means that we are unlikely to see different shield designs for the other 11 Constitution class starships. It's gonna be pretty tough to make fabrics with all those different prints on them for every ship's crew. The delta shield we all know and love didn't become the symbol for Starfleet until after the time of TOS- sort of a way of honoring the Enterprise for coming back from it's 5-year mission in one piece. For wardrobe simplicity, I can see the new movie trashing that idea. It's something I think only the folks on these boards will notice and it's a trivial continuity issue compared to some other things that we'll probably be complaining about in 8 months.

The idea that Starfleet adopted the Enterprise emblem because of Kirk's 5-year mission is one of those "fanon" things. There were still individual duty post insignias in place during TMP, so the official switch for the entire fleet came with the TWOK uniforms...

But it's all a moot point anyway if the reports about the uniforms are true (so far, they're batting a thousand right now). I think that the arrowhead insignia pin will be established as having always been the symbol for Starfleet.

It is possible, though, that the "command version" may be unique to Enterprise personnel (other ships and postings will have the same arrowhead insignia but different inlaid symbols, while cadets will may simply have blank arrowhead insignia)...

Hmmm, that would be interesting.
