But like "Brave New World" it's dammed near imposible to film.
My issue with brave New World....is it is 1984 where BB won...not fighting an ongoing war to win. There is no hope of rebellion..

And Orwell got the words thing wrong. the origins of Word is thought.....not the origin of thought, word.

Plus, I wouldn't mind living in the Brave New World all that much... as long as the soma and free love kept flowing!

there is actually hope built into 1984, although subtley. If you remember there was a woman who hung up her clothes to dry outside the secret room where the two "hung out" before they were caught. She sang a song about love and hope... and it beat out the "hate song" in the long run. That's the only hope I can find, but there may be more...

I never thought of it that way! I always viewed it as making reference to how easily the masses are swayed by a song or a phrase. I like your way of looking at it better!

Hummm...

A government that puts a country into a perpetual war state, in order to keep the population cowed.

They wire tap all the phones...

They kidnap, torture and kill people in "black prisons"

They support groups like "The Junior Anti-Sex Leauge" who's message is "Just say no."

They remove the right of the accuesed to confront their accusers (also known as "habeas corpus")

They use fear of attacks to keep themselves in power.

As you can see, the whole concept behind "1984" is preposterous! It could never happen here!

Remember kids, it's not paranoia if they are really out to get you!

Great post.

And in fact the modern technologies made monitoring and controling quite easy. Just think of the ammount of GPS equipped mobile phones, all the data firms are collecting for marketing purposes ... or to sell them. Nowadays big brother would be sooo easy, only a couple of wrong laws....

the thing is, it would take simultanious revolts, or coups around the world, otherwise there will always be another power out there to stop you. that's one thing with the premise of 1984, despite the well planned explanation in "the Book" it would be hard to get the entire world to be in perpetual war, etc. I can certainly see just the U.S. falling though.

Well it is sci-fi and, Orwell's perpetual war is not necessary very realistic but showed some old knowledge about wars, that they focus our attention away from interior policy.
Just take an example from your recent history, Bush's ratings were high in the immediate post 9/11 times, but went down afterwards as economic themes became more important.
