This is my first post, but here goes.
I think the biggest challenge for Star Trek will be to present a movie that has the "epic" feel that made Star Wars so successful (I am sorry to admit it). Star Trek has consistantly had great story telling and a human feel in its movies, but has too often fallen short on special effects and audience. I think Nemesis attempted to do this, but obviously fell slightly short, showing how the old method has become a bit long in the tooth. I think JJ and the new crew are doing a great job so far, and will likely give us a good movie. So, can ST do what it needs to to be a modern blockbuster? Can it reach beyond trekkies? I hope it'll be the #1 movie in the world, and beat Titanic in the box office... :P

I am a loyal trekkie, and as much as I hate to say it, A complete re-imagining of the entire franchise (and a re-boot of some major details) is likely what TREK needs to reach beyond the trekkies. It seems that this is what is being done. "Canon" will likely be erased and re-imagined. The latest series, "Enterprise", attempted to do just that and it failed miserably. We should be given a distinct reason as to WHY canon must be changed to comply with a series of events. Abrams is the guy who can do that for us. I am confident that Star Trek will go back to Roddenberry's original concept of the future.

Yes, I agree with you KJTrek. This movie will have to hit the mark well beyond the trekkie circle. I believe they are aiming for that as far as I can see. Just the enormous budget their getting says a lot about how Paramount feels about this movie. I'm stoked, I've been waiting 15 years for them to get it right and it looks like they're finally on the right track.

Sorry I reckon It'll be more sucessful than NEM but probally tie with INS which if the $150M budget is correct isn't too great but then who put all their eggs in one basket anyway seems bloody stupid to me every TNG film was designed to appeal to non star trek fans thats why we got
1.Rehash of geordies visor as a spy device plot 2.An explanation of holograms(Dixson Hill) 3.An explanation of holograms(Holoship), reused that worf brother plot crossed with the romulan/vulcan like pre warp plot 4.Argo ****e & B4 |

It will most likely end up as the most successful TREK movie made.

I can see it being very big, and probably the biggest trek movie yet. Would I like it to be #1 for 2008, you bet, will it, I have no idea.
