I'm hearing all this talk about if the film does really well, then there might even be a sequel to it. Does it really matter if the film will do well or not? I mean, look at Star Trek V; that did horribly and yet there was still Star Trek VI. Doesn't that tell you something?

Yes, they gave Star trek yet another chance. I don't expect them to keep doing it for ever, this movie needs to do well.

Star Trek is a franchise. Of course there will be sequels as long as the studio thinks there's money to be made off them.
With Star Trek XI, the plan is apparently to remake Star Trek into a franchise that can compete with the "giants" like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, Harry Potter, etc., IMO... I expect a trilogy if this movie does well myself.

Why is it always a trilogy? why not 4 movies or 5?

With a franchise, the standard formula in Hollywood is to sign everybody to an initial three-picture deal. You can negotiate to do more later depending on whether or not the first three were successful, as seems to be the case with the current Spider-man films.
Plus, society has most people conditioned to think in threes anyway...(three traffic lights, a triple-decker sandwich, three branches of government, three strikes yer out, etc.) ![]() EDIT: Or you can just blame George Lucas...
