It's totally understandable. They have a small theater, a small theater company and they don't want a Who concert style stampede on their hands. To me, this isn't a big deal. I've worked in theaters that present plays before as a stagehand, and you don't want some rabid fanbase stampeding through your nice clean little theater like a bunch of Texas Longhorns on an adrenaline high. You ought to be able to put on an enjoyable production without having to worry about that.

I think it's paranoia for a film that isn't even out yet.
Having been at the Who in Cincy back in '80, we didn't even know anyone got hurt, let alone killed, until the next day. We had been outside for almost 3 hours past start time for the show, basically the fans had had enough at that time.

It's very practical, and I don't see an issue with the decision. They're doing what they believe will be easiest, and will make them the most money!

It's really not that unusual. Often book signings have the caveat that only books purchased at the event will be signed.
