Hey guys what are the chances of Gary Mitchell appearing in the movie? Besides McCoy and Spock, Gary was considered the best friend of Kirk... kind of bad if they leave him I believe.
While browseing memory alpha I found this "Mitchell was an Academy friend of James T. Kirk, stemming back to the time then-lieutenant Kirk was serving as an instructor and Mitchell was a first-year cadet. That year, Mitchell aimed a "little blonde lab technician" towards Kirk as a means to distract his rigid instructor, and whom Kirk, in turn, almost married." Which brings up another point.. will we see a time when Kirk is being an instructor? |

OOh, very good points indeed, esp as I've read that the little blonde technician was supposed to be carol marcus.
I know he's only in one episode, but it would a weird bit of writing if he's doesn't crop up....that said, Spoilerific poss....

Hey! I asked this question months ago... Been wondering where the "Cannonites" are on this one? Where is Gary Mitchell?

Heh i just got done reading the books "My brother's keeper" and that's what got me started on Gary... I wouldn't mind seeing Q in another movie if this is successful on revamping the franchise... and from what i seen a lot of companies are putting a lot of money on this movie being a hit (from the toys to the movies)

I think this has been touched on in many threads...the general feeling seems to be if Gary shows up it will be as a quick mention that non-fans won't get. Like, Kirk would say to a passing cadet "Hey, Gary"...and we would all just about wet ourselves in excitement because OMG!!! That's GARY MITCHELL!!! but our family members would not even notice it happened because it was such a throw away....

I'm surprised he wasn't cast in the list. I would think J.J. would realize Gary's importance to pre-TOS Kirk.

Well in regards to Gary Mitchell... if the hangar bay scene rumor is true, then the story picks up after WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE... Because as the "cannonites" would so likely point out it involves Kirk and McCoy on the ship, and McCoy was not the Chief Surgeon when Mitchell was onboard with Kirk, Mark Piper was the CMO....

True, Gary was important to Kirk pre TOS, but the number of storylines that can be incorporated into a movie that may very well be spanning a couple of decades in time will have to be evaluated carefully. In TOS, Mitchell was forgotten by the 3rd week of the first season and he is far less crucial to the development of the current characters' relationships. You've got 2-2 1/2 hours to develop Kirk-Spock-McCoy etc, plus bring in Nero and a future Spock. I think if Mitchell is in the mix, it will probably be like the character of Biggs in Star Wars in relation to Luke. It was meaningful then only if you read the book and knew the deeper story between them.
