Ever since 1980, if you ask me, it's been total schlock. Every male artist does one pickup truck song, one heartbreak song and a ballad and then fades away. Every female artist does a cutesy tune, a feminist diatribe against men, and a song about leaving their mother, and they fade away too. It's what happens when all the good songwriters get ignored because they've aged a bit. Good singers should sing, good writers should write, if you're both, that's great, but those are few and far between, and a majority of country artists are the first, but not the second. I've heard some real trash on country stations lately, and precious little of the genius of people like Hank Williams Sr., Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Lefty Frizell,
Willie Nelson,George Jones and the like. Country music could benefit greatly from an influx of talented writers and someone brave enough to tell the good singers who aren't good writers to check their ego's at the studio door.
