It seems the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy is up for review this week, and several of the major news organizations are focusing on how successful/unsuccessful the policy has been, since it first went into effect in 1993.
Since that time, 25 other countries, including the UK, Germany, and Israel have all integrated gays into their ranks without any major problems. What do you think? If we're ever to get up to "Starfleet Standards"... is it time for this "stepping stone" policy to be tossed, and replaced with full equality?

Regardless of the policy's unpopularity, it does seem to work, so far. The few notable exceptions being people who just could not, or would not keep their trap shut. If you're in the military, you're there to do a job and defend your country. Nobody in a foxhole with you wants to hear about the intimate details of your love life, regardless of your preference. They're too busy trying to keep from getting killed, and you should be as well. So my opinion would be, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I hope by the 23rd century we'll be past petty things like that.

I don't see sexuality needs to be a question anyway, as someone else said it makes no difference when you're doing your job and are on duty and whomever is involved in your private life is just that!

But one should never be ashamed eaither of what one is, or made to feel that way.

Very true, but then not everyone feels the need to inform everyone they meet of who they're involved with in private either. It's not that they're not proud or confident, it's just not anyone else's business. If 'don't ask, don't tell' is acceptable at the moment as a compromise then leave it as it is.
