No, you're absolutely right, IV was a great soundtrack score precisely because it was very different to what had gone before. I do like it a lot, but only one choice per person!

And if you watch the animated version of Lord of the Rings (Ralph Bakshi's movie), you'll hear what would become the theme to Star Trek IV in the end credits.

For me, Goldsmith's score to The Motion Picture still stands as one the finest ever created. The standard of composition with all its wonderful nuance and complexities is truly magnificent - the man was a bonafide musical genius. I think the true litmus test is the fact you can happily listen to the CD as the inspired piece it is above and beyond any connection to Star Trek or its status as a soundtrack. I will always treasure and prize this grandeous music, whether it's watching with the resplendent images of the movie, or listening intently on its own as the album classic it unequivocally is.

No it's a remake..listen to the version in FC and the original recording. John Kay may have redone the song for FC, I don't know, but that is not the original version in the film.
