Well, Lucas put the 'grit' into sci-fi. That's part of what that universe was about. I think that just the fact that phasers have a 'stun' setting means that they are not going to appear as violent when fired. But I always wondered what would happen if a human was it by a phaser set on 'heat' or 'disrupt.'

I remember how disappointed I was when TMP came out and we saw security carrying these brand new phasers... and never used them. This time around, I wanna see them and I wanna see them fired on every setting, and I want them to look just like the ones I have in my hands now!

There was a scene they were supposed to do in the film where Kirk and Spock were floating around inside V'ger in their spacesuits. Kirk was about to get enveloped by crystal formations, and Spock was supposed to phaser him out. Sadly, because of time constraints and budget, the scene never went beyond the miniature storyboard phase.

There would've been a man in a rock-suit in Star Trek V if the budget hadn't gone "tango uniform".

But, I was referring to the original series Trek when you had a man in a rock suit in (IIRC) The Savage Curtain, and a man under a carpet designed to look like lava (as best it may) in Devil in the Dark, and of course, the Space Hippies in The Way to Eden. So, Star Trek really gets it right too.
