This is the one piece of ST equipment that does not need an update. I still find the aesthetics of the original hand phaser quite believable and cool looking. Unlike the communicator and tricorder which could use overhauls. If they kept the general lines of the phasers I & II but added more intricate controls that would be cool.

The phaser rifle. on the other hand, needs a major overhaul if it is being used in ST XI.

Really, I think they both look great naked.

For something that appeared in only one episode, that phaser rifle sure got a lot of attention. Compared to TOS phasers, I think it looks very un-Trek like and I'd be happy NOT to see it in the new movie. The classic phasers are so unique and recognizable that JJ would be a fool to fatz around with them. Leave 'em alone! I paid $1200.00 for a Master Replica model and I don't want to have to spend more to update it.

You know whenever i see someone get stunned with a phaser it looks lame. Now think of any drama on television where someone gets an electic charge from a cardiopulmonary resucitation machine and you almost feel the pain. A vast difference.

Perhaps not having a frame of reference makes it hard to convey the idea.

I liked the effect of blasters in the original Star Wars. Someone got hit with it....BAM, flash of fire where their flesh (or heart) used to be.

I'm thinking more the effect of what it looks like when someone is hit with a phaser. Hitherto it looks like cheesy kid acting compared to gunfights that look very realistic.

I always assumed that phasers cooked your insides more than they blasted a hole in you. That way you save tons of $ on effects, too!
